Greatest. Game. Ever.
6-0, 6-3, 8-3, 8-8, 9-8, 9-9, 13-9, 13-11. Keith and Greg (pictured) just kept fighting back all game but came up 2 runs short. It took 10 innings to decide game 3 on Wednesday and no lead was safe. After Dan and Bryan jumped out to a 6-0 lead it looked like this would be over quick but Childs kept getting on base (10-20) and Torry kept driving him in (10 RBI). Even after a 10th inning grand slam by Generelli, the winning run came to the plate in the bottom of the 10th but a groundout mercifully ended this marathon.

Awards Checkup
2/3 of the way through the season and all awards are still very much up for grabs. MVP Frontrunners for the MVP would have to be Keith Torrey (.504, 51R, 39HR, 58RBI) and Bryan Dunn(.493, 61R, 35HR, 64RBI). However, a late push by Tim Dunn could land him his 2nd straight. Cy Young Matt Dunn (4-1 5.38), Tim Dunn (4-3, 4.10) and Bryan Dunn (5-3, 5.02) round out the Dunn Cy Young trio. Keith Torrey could also factor in. Both Tim and Matt are hot right now which could give them an advantage. Rookie of the Year Despite Mike Santoine's jabber, it's going to be Matt Dunn in a route. View Past Headlines |
Tim Dunn returns; Cousin Matt hurt
Tim Dunn and Keith Torrey returned in grand fashion to the RWL on Wednesday and didn't waste any time. Tim pitched 6 innings of one-run ball and drove in 7 runs in game 1. Keith was stellar at the plate an earned himself a win on the mound as well. Mike Santoine made his first RWL appearance on Wednesday and was solid on the mound but he was edged out in game 3 by Bryan Dunn, the proud owner of a 7 game winning streak. MVP candidate Matt Dunn may have some rehab to do as he tweaked his back early in game 3. Early images (shown above) from his physician, Dr. Kenneth Noisewater, clearly show a lower back 'ouchy'. More on this story as it develops. View Past Headlines |

He IS my hero
MVP/Cy YoungMake no mistake about it, this year belonged to Tim Dunn. Tim will take home his first MVP trophy to go along with his 4th Cy Young award. Tim's 27-7 overall record will be marveled at for years to come. Even 3-time MVP Bryan Dunn had this to say leaving the Commissioner's office on voting day: "Tim was a force this season, there was no way I couldn't vote for him in either category." Tim also expressed some Ricky Henderson like thanks to his fans via his publicist Dan Dupris: "Today, all of my fans have been vindicated. It was a wonderful season and I am thankful to all those who stood by me. Today, I am the greatest there is." The numbers don't lie, 27-7, 64 HR, 103 RBI to go along with 11-3, 4.12 ERA tell the story. Congrats to Tim on an amazing season. Tim swept the Cy Young category with 6 votes and grabbed the MVP vote in a 4-2 cast over his cousin Bryan Dunn. Offensive Player Bryan Dunn took home his 4rd Offensive Player of the Year award. "I actually voted for Mike [Beland]" Dunn said after the news. Dunn's 70 HR's and 116 RBI were season bests. He also batted .423 and led the league in walks (60) and OBP (.534). Mike Beland also received two votes. Defensive Player A tough choice this year as four players received votes. It was Greg Childs and Mike Beland tying votes 2-2 leaving behind Gregg Frantz and Bryan Dunn who had one vote each. I would say a tie is like kissing your sister, but since Greg is an only child I submit that he and Mike should kiss each other on opening day next year. It is the 4th defensive player award for Childs and first for Beland. Rookie of the Year This was an easy one. Rookie sensation Jeff Johnson, who sold a rookie record 752 replica jerseys in the pro shop this season, took home the award in a 5-1 vote over Nicholas Dunn. It should also be noted that Jeff cleaned up the WWL awards earning MVP and Cy Young honors. Jeff, fresh off a move to Wiffle talent bed Hubbardston, MA may have to build another wing for all his new hardware. View Past Headlines |
Sweep Dreams
Team "Right" recorded the first World Series sweep in RWL history as Bob Hastings, Jeff Johnson and Bryan Dunn won a trio of one run games for a 3-0 series sweep of team "Left" (Tim Dunn, Mike Beland, Greg Childs). A marathon game 1, already being called the best World Series game ever, ended on a Bob Hastings walkoff homer which sent the Lefties into a tailspin from which they would never recover.Bobby Hastings took home his third World Series MVP trophy, and fourth World Series ring (tying him with Bryan Dunn for most rings). Bobby contributed a walkoff homer in game 1 along with an outfield assist on a tag-up with the bases loaded. Timmy Dunn, who was a record 20 games over .500 for the regular season failed to produce any wins in the Series. He pitched well in game 1 (9 IP, 3 ER) but did not record a single RBI. Childs also failed to drive in a run despite hitting the ball hard every at bat (adding fuel to the rumor that he had been taking the recently banned substance Wallabe Urine). Mike Beland tried to carry his team by driving in 5 in 3 games, but they were just too heavy. The writers here at the Acosta Tribune are hard at work pumping out the full story which will be available in tomorrow's edition. View Past Headlines |
Milestone Monday
RWL MilestonesIt was a day for milestones on Monday as two players conquered 100 HR marks. Bryan Dunn (shown above in this commemorative poster which will be sold in the RWL pro shop for $29.99) hammered his 300th career HR in the 6th inning of game 1. Not to be outdone, Tim Dunn launched career HR number 200 in game 2. Both players gave speeches after the game and were awarded a run around the park to thank the fans. This event was not without controversy however as RWL superfan Leonid Lampskin would not agree to give Tim Dunn the #200 ball back. Leonid told Tim he can bid on it with everyone else on ebay. A tale of two Johnsons I'm not talking about Tim Dunn's favorite porno. WWL great and RWL newcomer Jeff Johnson had the most up and down Mondays of his life. Jeff was spectacular in the field all night, stealing hits away from everybody. "His hands are where RBIs go to die" said Mike Beland. On the mound, Jeff looked fantastic in game 1 until a horrific 6th inning which saw 6 solo homers by Tim Dunn and Mike Beland. In game 3 Johnson settled in however, gathering a win and driving in 6 at the plate. Beland continues pace Mike Beland, who has already shattered his personal bests in HRs and RBIs, continued to hammer the ball on Monday. With 62 homers and 102 RBI through just 34 games, Beland has asserted himself as a professional hitter in addition to his other title as fearsome masterbater. Tim Dunn locks up title? Once again Tim Dunn looked down the proverbial barrel at Bryan Dunn with a one game lead and willed his way to victory. Tim would not relinquish his grip on the standings as he homered in each of his last 5 ABs in game 2 to pull his team ahead. Tim would also win game 3 to increase his lead to 3 games. With the World Series looming, this week could have closed the door on Bryan's hopes to sit atop the standings. View Past Headlines |
Interleague fireworks
With Greg Childs on a pilgrimage to Australia to learn the intricacies of the didgeridoo, who would step up and take his place? None other than the WWL combination of Jeff Johnson and Gregg Frantz. The WWLers were welcomed to Rutland Yards on Monday to participate in a darkness shortened two game set. Frantz and Johnson, veterans of both the fast plastic and smack talk felt right at home as they challenged the RWL to a interleague matchup in game 2.The interleague matchup would fail to produce in the drama department however as the RWL squad, on the heels of a huge first inning and yet another Tim Dunn gem took the game 8-4. The all time series is now knotted at 2 games apiece. There were some tense moments after Frantz hit Beland with 5 straight pitches and both benches cleared (see above). Cooler tempers would prevail however, Sam Malone said he would review the tape but doubt there would be any suspensions or fines. Overshadowed by the interleague matchup was a fantastic game 1. After being down 5-1, the firm of Dunn Dunn Frantz staged a rousing comeback and handing Beland and Johnson a 10-9 loss. Down 8-6 in the top of the sixth, Bryan Dunn gave the visitors the lead with a three run homer. Frantz would add another and shut down Mike and Jeff in the sixth after a leadoff Beland homer. One game to rule them all
The most important regular season game in RWL history? Undoubtedly. After winning 9 straight games to pull even with Tim, the Wiffle Gods pitted the cousins against each other in a battle for first place. Tim Dunn would only relinquish his place at the top of the standings if it was pried away from his cold, dead hands. In Tim's finest performance of his illustrious pitching career, he reclaimed his spot with a 1-0 victory, allowing no hits and a single walk. A solo homer by Mike Beland was the difference (See above as Tim showers Beland with some champagne). Tim was not responsible for all the drama on Monday however. Mike Beland set a record of his own in a 6-4 win. Mike allowed 11 walks but was able to work his way out of several jams, including bases loaded situations in each of the first 5 innings. Mike also maintained pace in the HR/RBI race, hitting 6 homers and driving in 10. Greg Childs, who is the hottest he has ever been at the plate leaves for Australia in search of the illusive albino Kangaroo. Will Childs be able to keep up the hot streak after chasing this beast across the outback? Only time will tell. View Past Headlines |
Class of '96 takes over
St. Johns class of '96 grads Greg Childs and Bryan Dunn took center stage this week as this three game set did not disappoint. Childs (shown here donning the St. Johns Pioneer outfit before taking the field with fellow grad Bryan Dunn) set a career high in game 3 with 4 homers and 7 RBIs as the Pioneers squeaked out a 10-9 victory. The other two games belonged to Bryan Dunn, who went 18-27 in the series with 16 homers and 21 RBI. More importantly, Bryan closed within one game in the standings of MVP front-runner and cousin Tim. No fan was as more excited about Monday's events as our own stagehand, Joey VanderCastle, who had both Dunn and Childs in his RWL fantasy league starting lineup. "I traded for Greg earlier this month expecting one of these nights, I'm a f'n genius" said Joe. Beland was a tough luck loser in game 3. After a couple of miscues in the field by counterpart Tim Dunn, Beland was able to close the game within one run with a pair of longballs in the 6th. Childs decision to walk Beland to face Tim Dunn was a risky one, but Dunn grounded sharply to his cousin to end a nailbiter. One thing is for sure, the RWL has never been more competitive. Torreymania returns; Mother Nature takes issue
In the days leading up to the July 24th series at Rutland Yards, the fans were restless as rumor spread of a possible return to the field for 2006 RWL MVP Keith Torrey. As Mother Nature rained blows upon Rutland Yards, the grounds crew feverishly prepared the field. According to Sam Malone, nothing would have been able to stop these games from being played. On the rain soaked tundra, the boys took the field for some of the best wiffle action of the season. Though difficult to pitch and field, three games were played, including two one run games. Torrey was clearly not his MVP self, losing two of three (1-1 on the hill). Mike Beland, Tim Dunn and Bryan Dunn all attempted to make a case for the 2007 MVP while Greg Childs continued his hot streak at the plate from the leadoff spot. A few slips and spills aside, including a complete breakdown of athleticism by Tim Dunn on a liner through the box, the RWL maintained it's fever pitch. We even saw a streaker on the field in honor of Torrey's return, complete with a "hit-it-here" bullseye on his special place.

Is he dead?
Cy Young was actually alive and well, festering deep inside the nether regions of Tim Dunn on Monday. Also festering in the fiery loins of Tim was Roy Face, the owner of the highest single season winning percentage in MLB history. Sam Malone is currently speaking with cemetery officials to exhume the bodies of Cy and Roy to ensure Tim has not been gnawing on their remains. Tim Dunn's 14-3 overall record is simply amazing as he continued to spit hot fire, Dylon style, at his opponents on Monday. Adding some flare were WWL great Jeff Johnson and rookie Dan Dunn. Despite some serious nastiness on the hill, Jeff was the recipient of two tough luck losses. One again, the RWL is saturated with competitiveness to the tune of three closely contested games. Week 8 promises to be just as good.

2 Good, 2 Be Bad
It was a series of two pairs on Monday as Tim Dunn and Mike Beland were stellar on the diamond and Bryan Dunn and Greg Childs faltered. Tim Dunn moved to an amazing 12-2 on the season and 6-1 on the mound with Beland getting a pair of wins on the hill. On the other side of things, Bryan Dunn (pictured above) and Greg Childs went a combined 2-30 at the plate in the last two games (though Childs earned a victory on the mound). Though Tim Dunn's offensive numbers (.451, 24HR, 38RBI) don't quite lead the league, he may run away with the MVP on record alone if no one stops this ridiculous trend.

Walkovius Officus
The walkoff homer (Walkovius Officus), a species rarely seen in the wild were taken captive by the dozens at Rutland Yards last evening. Rookie Nicholas Dunn, making his first appearance in the RWL not only homered in his first ever game, he came up in the bottom of the 7th and wrapped a ball around Trujillo's Pole to walk his team off (see image above). Not to be outdone, Mike Beland returned the favor off of Nicholas in game 3, hammering a 7th inning walkoff of his own. Mike's shot capped a comeback which found his team down 9-2 after 2 innings. In the 2nd game, Tim Dunn's lack of control led to a 8-2 loss to his cousin and arch-rival Bryan Dunn.

Week 4 Cancelled
A lack of interest has canceled week 4 of the RWL season. Only three players: Mike Beland, Greg Childs and Bryan Dunn showed up to play on the most gorgeous of summer days Monday. Tim Dunn had a Ramirez-esque scheduled day off to vacation with the family of his special lady. Rich Nartowt was a late scratch due to a severe case of nerves and both Gregg Frantz and Rob Trujillo were no-shows.One positive note from yesterday, Greg Childs (pictured above) made the weekly pilgrimage to Rutland Yards despite being maimed in a golf cart incident at the prestigious Quail Hollow Country Club on Sunday. Both Beland and Childs cited disappointment for not being able to atone for their questionable effort last week. It seems like there has been some sort of issue every week in the always unpredictable RWL this season. Here's hoping there are no problems with week 5. View Past Headlines |
Pitching and Defense
After an offensive display the first two weeks of the RWL season, the players took the field expecting to continue to dent more balls than ever before. What transpired instead was an offensive shutdown orchestrated by the hurlers of the RWL. It has been said that the hitters are usually ahead of the pitchers early in the wiffle season. Well the pitchers pulled even with much haste this year. On another note, Tim Dunn continues to simply win wiffle ball games. Dunn won three more last night stretching is record to an astounding 7-0 this year. He dedicated last nights effort to his great grand uncle Rufus (pictured left) who taught him the secrets of the wiffle society over the offseason. In another astounding turn of events, Mike Beland and Greg Childs refused to play a fourth game citing hunger and a sore vagina. Making it even more impressive were other players who were inundated with visitors all evening and refused to leave the field even to say hello to his guests. Beland and Childs are currently awaiting word from the office of the Commissioner to see if they will incur any penalty for their outlandish behavior. View Past Headlines |
Week 2 in the books
Week 2 is in the books and not even the thunder and lightening could prevent the men of the RWL from getting 4 games in. Gregg Frantz made his first appearance of hopefully many but had a difficult time adjusting to the closer mound and slower pitches of the RWL. Frantz vowed to skip work all week to train for next Monday. This week belonged to Mike Beland who was completely unstoppable at the plate and earned a win on the mound. His two week totals of 17 homers and 30 RBI are a record worth noting. Some others feel that Sam Malone should watch him piss in a cup. View Past Headlines |
